Rock breakwater forming the west side of Newport Harbor's entrance channel. The City identifies the entrance as two lighted jetties, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lists the east and west jetties as project elements of this Critical Harbor of Refuge. The reflected south-swell wave beside this structure is known as The Wedge. Do not treat the rocks as a maintained fishing pier: uneven, wet rock, powerful shorebreak, and nearby vessel traffic are material hazards.

NOAA ENC Direct soundings near the mapped west-jetty line range from shallow water nearer the shore/channel side to substantially deeper water toward the seaward outer reach. Those points are chart soundings (Z values in metres) and are not a surveyed profile against the rocks, so this assessment uses broad depth character only and intentionally omits unsupported `approxDepthFt` values. The physical fishing assessment is further limited by the City's no-fishing rule for this jetty.
A jetty's rock pile is the structure — there's no deck, just boulders stacked out into the water. Snags happen when your line or hook drops into a gap between rocks instead of open water. Rock sitting shallow, close to the surface, is the easiest to hang up on, and gets worse as the tide drops and exposes more of it. Rock that gives way to deeper water has less exposed structure to catch on, but a hook that does snag there is harder to pull free. Sandy gaps between rock sections are the clearest, lowest-snag water on a jetty.
